Tatung started manufacturing electric motors in 1949 . Tatung was the first company to manufacture electric motors in Taiwan.

In order to provide both domestic and overseas customers with high quality and performance electric motors , Tatung expanded its facilities and built Sanhsia Motor Plant in 1974 and Tatung Shanghai Company in 1998, successively.

To serve North American customers, Tatung opened Tatung Electric Company of America in 1988.
