Fire Resistant Cable is a cable that is specifically designed to be fire resistant or a cable that still functions to carry current for some time when a fire occurs. When a cable burns, the focus of attention for this type of cable is the additional MICA material which functions to protect short circuits between the cores.
After all the plastic layers are burned. Mica is a mixed Alumina-Silicate mineral material which has a laminar structure. Mica has a crystal melting point at a temperature of 1200 - 1300°C, Insulation Resistance (Ohm.cm) at 23°C 10'6 1017 and at a temperature of 500° C 108 - 101°, Break Down Voltage (kV/rnm) 150 - 230. When burning, mica will fuse (stick firmly) to the copper conductor to form an insul layer which functions electrically to resist the flowing electric current.
